ChromeDeck - Your New Shiny Friend ? A quick comparison review.

So I am trying the new shiny toy that everyone is talking about, it is the Chrome version of the popular desktop client “TweetDeck” . First of all I must confess that I will generally prefer a browser extension over a desktop application if I am working with just one screen. I like to have the ability to surf seamlessly and with Chromed Bird, as far as Twitter is concerned, I am more than satisfied . Of course if you would like to monitor multiple accounts or check your updates across multiple social networks that wouldn’t be the obvious choice, but there is still some workarounds. I thought initially that ChromeDeck would sit like every other extensions but to access it you have to open a new tab which is unfortunate for me because I run already Speed Dial. You will have to disable it in order to use your new shiny friend though to be honest it is the same with every Google Chrome Web Store Apps so I hope that Speed Dial will find a solution. Chrome TweetDeck, not to be confused with the other ChromeDeck, is not really different from Seesmic Web or Yoono when used in tab mode.

I was more waiting for an advanced version of Chromed Bird or for a more integrated sidebar version of Yoono. But ChromeDeck do looks great with its Lazyscope-like visual updates, though apart from the fact that it is inside your browser and not on your desktop, you will still have constantly to leave the page you are browsing to access it. I have made several screenshots of the aforementioned aplications so you will have a better idea of how they display. To see them just click on this BridgeURL . From left to the right ChromeDeck | Chromed Bird | Seesmic Web| Yoono (Tab Mode) . Of course ChromeDeck is still in its early stage and if I had to choose between the desktop version and the web app, I will certainly use the later. It uses less resources and it is more suitable for single-monitor set-ups, as an extra bonus you can now benefit from Chrome spell check dictionaries ( at the moment TweetDeck only supports U.S English) . Just a quick note about this particular tweet :

Overall it is a step in the right decision though personally I would have prefer a sidebar application. For now I will keep using Chromed Bird in conjunction with Yoono even if its sidebar mode on Chrome is not as integrated as its Firefox counterpart. I guess it is a question of feeling, the best way to form your judgement would be to try them all.

A challenger appears: PostPost turns your Facebook stream into a Flipboard

At least 100 years ago that is to say this afternoon I was writing about Paper.li entering the Facebook curation game. Though it was and still is in its early stage I thought the move they made was pretty clever. But a strong challenger has just appeared but this time in real-time, albeit only for Facebook.

I wouldn’t say the two applications have the same aim but I can see how it will help me see contents from the pages I have subscribe from. Right now with the way Facebook pushes content to my home feed I rarely see them, I have to resort using third party applications like TweetDeck or Seesmic. I think it is a good idea to have it as one of your start-up tabs.

New Facebook profile will bring more embarrassment and Spam for the whole family !

So how you may already know Facebook has rolled out its new profile design

Well the video looks like fun isn’t it ? The only problem is that as you can’t prevent people from tagging you and as tagged photos of you are pushed to the forefront: New Facebook profile will bring more embarrassment and Spam for the whole family ! On the paper it looks like a fun way to define yourself with photos as you can see on the picture below :

In reality it can become a nightmare ! In no time when people will start to realise the implications it could have on their business fan page, unscrupulous companies will start tagging the hell out of you! More importantly if someone tags an embarrassing photo, everyone will be able to see it ! So let’s say you were pretty drunk that Saturday night and that the hangover is so strong it keeps you away from your computer for the whole Sunday. Yes you know those long Sundays dedicated to animal documentaries and drinking water. You will only know on Monday how your profile has been trashed by this new feature. I have tagged pictures of drunk people and here how your profile could look like in the real world.

Facebook madness goes on!

Facebook newspapers now available on paper.li

I always have been a huge fan of Paper.li and it is really impressive to see how they have evolved. There is clearly no competitors in the user generated newspaper field now: Newscred has changed its strategy and is now platform oriented , and The Twitter Times clearly offers less options.In my opinion it is the best way to stay up to date provided that you have set up your lists or your hashtags well.

From their blog : “We have just released the possibility to create Facebook papers. A first step in working with Facebook data, so any feedback (comments below) will be appreciated!

For now, you can create papers based on a search of all public posts on Facebook (this means posts from people that have set their profile/wall to ‘public’). It is a bit like a Twitter tag paper, but for Facebook… Facebook currently supports only very basic keyword searches on public posts - so a paper based on the search ‘climate energy’ will find all posts containing both words - paper.li then extracts all links, videos and photos, analyzes them, ranks them and creates the paper in a similar fashion to Twitter papers. Just tried this new extension, I think the title is self-explanatory .

I made a few attempts and they were most of the time correct though you have to talk continuously and fast. If not you’re message will be sent right away to Twitter. There is no signing up or OAuth so you have to be already logged in Twitter.com for it to work.

A right step in the right direction !

Bit.ly launches "Bundles" Multi-Link Sharing with One URL' , How it compares to BridgeURL ?

Bit.ly one of the most popular URL shortener has just released a multi-link sharing service called “Bundles”. Services like this already existed and I was really enthusiast about BridgeURL that I have discovered via a post on Mashable . Before comparing the two products here is bit.ly key features announcement :

Services comparison:

One of the main advantage of using Bit.ly Bundles over BridgeURL will be necessarily their analytics power, but it has other interesting features. I will try to compare them features by features when applicable.

Main interface:

BridgeURL interface is pretty basic all you have to do is to write a title and post your links, no fancy feature heres. But it must be noted that you don’t have to sign up to use their service, it is at the same time an advantage and a weakness as we will see later.

Bit.ly Bundles requires a registration but it is not a real problem as most of us already have an account. The good thing is that you will have the possibility to add comments and descriptions to your links. As you can see on the screenshot below it even displays thumbnails (when available), which gives a nice graphic experience. As it is linked to your account the created bundle is stored and can be edited in the future, something that is really missing with BridgeURL …

You also have the option to rearrange the links order which comes in handy. Here is my first bundle created with Bit.ly : http://bit.ly/bundles/vonbrucken/1?preview=1 As you can see they have enabled Disqus comments, the About.me thumbnail is not displayed but I think that most will be displayed. The BridgeURL way of displaying links looks pale in comparison as you can see here, there is no way of storing your link, unless you bookmark it you will lose it forever. As there is no registration form, there is no way of editing or enriching your links collection. People won’t be able to comment directly on the page and you have no way of tracking how many times it has been watched. But despite of its imperfections BridgeURL is still relevant thanks to its magnificent Slideshow. Read : “Facebook Upgrades E-Mail To A ‘Modern Messaging System” by Wired.com I really doubt it will be the case unless you rethink all your Facebook connections from the start (which will take a lot of time ). For example waiting myself for this new email services I wanted to clean my messy inbox. The only problem is that I have 1249 unread messages and there is no option for mass-deletion right now. Maybe the released product will have it but most people are talking about a product they haven’t tested yet. Plus I really think that they should fix some existing issues and stay more focus instead of aiming at the world domination . • Fortunately not everyone have joined this concert of praises, for “The Next Web” Facebook has just reinvented the power of meh … Other are just waiting for Facebook to issue existing nuisance problems …

Born out of frustration this simple extension is worth a check, it still in its early stages so you may experience some bugs … You can download it here for your enjoyment: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ghgpdooiniacomgdndbapjfcemofjhcn# Jokes aside, I really like the idea of an extension that can filter the content on a page with the ability to blacklist authors or keywords. How this extension could get better ?

• More authors and keywords/themes

• Detachable TechCrucnh Headquarters panel as the window won’t display entirely if you have a lot of extensions installed.

• Would definitively use it on other websites !
